Using oil paints can be as complicated or as simple as you like. You can either use the paint with no additives, or choose from a selection of various mediums and pastes for oil paint.

If you don't like the smell of turpentine, we have odourless white sprit, and a eucalyptus smelling rectified turpentine. You will need this for cleaning your oily brushes. Or you could try our our popular range of water mixable oil paints which totally eliminates these odours and need for turpentine. With oil paint you can paint alla prima, or with layers and glazing techniques. Take note of the transparency of the colour you are looking to buy. Some thought and planning is required before you do an oil painting. But then most painting does require some thought!

You certainly don't want to be in a hurry with oil paints unless you are using a quick drying medium or alkyd medium. Oil paint will dry quicker if you thin it out, but generally is days if not weeks and sometimes years for really thick painting. Don't forget to wash you brushes with turpentine or white spirit and clean out with warm soapy water.
